June 3, 2008 Demo Artist
Al Setton
The Westlake Village
Art Guild is pleased to welcome Al Setton for the June 3, 2008 Buffet Dinner and Art Demo Meeting.
Al’s work captures California’s joyful, energetic, yet laid-back
ambiance, and is reminiscent of his roots in the Mediterranean. He received
his formal education at Cairo University, the University of Santa Clara and
the California Art Institute. In addition, he has taken numerous workshops
including with Rex Brandt, Robert E. Wood, Charles Reid, Katherine Chang
Liu, Christopher Schink, Henry Fukuhara and others.
His current work is in water media (watercolor, acrylic, ink, gouache) on
paper in a relatively large format. Subject matter includes land, city,
seascapes, figures and all things in life that engages him. Bright energetic
relationships of shapes, color harmonies and calligraphy are characteristic
of his recent body of work.
He feels fortunate to have been the recipient of numerous awards, most
recently receiving the 2004 Daler Rowney Award at the Watercolor West Annual
Open Juried Show. He has also been juried in to a National Watercolor
Society Member Show and participated in numerous art exhibits. His work is
in many public and private national and international collections including
the Arthur Ashe Center, Pauley Pavilion and the Student Activities Center at
UCLA.
Says Al, “The process is very important to my way of working because the
enjoyment I feel in the handling the medium is reflected in the final
product. I function in a place of playful spontaneity which produces
freshness in my work that, I hope, will remind viewers of joyful times in
their own lives.”
